A walkway in the village of Annacurra, Wicklow, will be named The Ciaran Shannon Walk.
Also, on July 3rd and 4th Annacurra will play host to footballers from Sligo and Toronto, along with former Wicklow County Stars who will be taking part in a seven aside competition being organised by Annacurra GAA Club for the Ciaran Shannon Cup.
It promises to be great week-end and a fitting tribute to Ciaran on the anniversary of his passing.
On Wednesday November 18th, in conjunction witrh the Ireland Canada Chamber of Commerce, a pub quiz will be held in the Delta Chelsea Hotel - at Gerrard & Yonge, Toronto.
Tables (of four people) cost just $100.
This event has been running for years, and is a really fun team night.
Many thanks to the Chamber for donating this year's proceeds to the Ciaran Shannon fund.
This site is a place where the friends, colleagues, teammates and fellow footballers of Ciaran Shannon can learn about events planned to commemorate and honour this man of great integrity and spirit.
All those who knew Ciaran were heartbroken to learn of his death on June 27, 2009.Ciaran (aged 37), his wife Avril, who is pregnant with their fourth child and his daughters Ciara (8), Jade (6) and Laci-Jane (4) were travelling to Blessington when they were involved in a four car pile-up at Mullacagh on N81 in Ireland. Thankfully his family escaped with just minor injuries however our dear friend Ciaran succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
This site is the product of the efforts of those brought together by the tragedy of Ciaran’s death. Assembled here you will find photos and clippings that capture the vibrant man Ciaran was and describe the outpouring of grief that his death elicited in Ireland and Canada.
Our aim is to provide a legacy for Avril and Ciaran’s children. And although Ciaran was a savvy insurance professional who took the necessary steps to provide for his family in the event of his early death, regrettably the reality in such a situation is that there will always be a burden placed upon the surviving spouse. Through our efforts we hope to lessen that burden somewhat.
Note 1:This PayPal account is administered by our Treasurer, Cormac Monaghan CA (on behalf of the Ciaran Shannon Canada Tribute Fund) and so his email address appears on the PayPal page.
A bank account has been opened in the name of this fundraising initiative. All donations via the PayPal tool are credited to this bank account. Both the PayPal and bank accounts are administered by our Treasuer, in tandem with two other authorised bank signatories (Steve Mallory and Mark O'Brien). A full accounting of our fundraising efforts will be made available to all donors at the end of this process. If you require any further information on this please contact Cormac, or either of the two co-chairs of the Ciaran Shannon Canada Tribute - Steve Mallory or Mark O'Brien.
Every penny raised that is not required to offset the costs involved with running the event itself will go directly to Ciaran’s family. Just as important as raising funds, we are looking forward to showing Avril and her children, sadly three of whom will only have the vaguest of memories and one of whom will never know Ciaran, how much he meant to those who worked and played with him in Canada.
